Media and Art students got a taste for filmmaking after creating a piece which was premiered at the prestigious Turner Contemporary.
The six-day film project concluded with a premiere to the public on the Margate steps, as part of One Ocean 2026, an event that featured guest speakers, workshops and film screenings on the human relationship with the ocean.
The students took part in planning, storyboarding, filming, and processing the footage with the help of local director, Jess Dadds, as well as support from Sam Giles and Ned Suesat-Williams of the Crab Museum. The project was supported by Into Film’s ‘Every Child a Filmmaker’ initiative.
Toby, Level 2 Media student, said: “Working on this project makes me feel included. It feels nice to collaborate. It means other people can know what my skills are, and then I learn about other people’s skills.”
Toby and Poppy, Level 3 Art and Design student, worked hard on creating props to be used in the production while chatting about work placements and career paths with artist Sam Giles.
Poppy said: “We’re making the portable, like a metamorphosis of the character. And we’re trying to make the outside area which is concrete and very dull. We’re trying to make it as realistic as possible.”
Filming took place over two days, and the final footage was processed in the EKC Broadstairs College darkroom.with seaweed instead of the standard darkroom chemicals, matching the environment-first message of the One Ocean 2026 weekend.
