Autumn Community Week Roundup

15 November 2024
Our Autumn Community Week has seen students and staff from across the College take part in social action projects.

Community Week is an ongoing commitment where students and staff from across the College take part in social action projects.

It is a wonderful opportunity for students to use the skills they have learnt or are currently learning by putting them into practice to help the local community.

Let’s take a look at some of the things that the College has been doing this week:

Painting and Decorating | Renovations at St Peter’s Baptist Church

Painting and Decorating students have been busy giving the Church Hall at the St Peter’s Baptist Church a fresh coat of paint. They’ve been able to hone their cutting-in skills and work to a real brief in the industry.

Nurture Forest School | Gardening and Composters for Bradstow Court

Students have spent the week offering winter car safety checks to any drivers on campus. They’ve been busy testing the car breaks, wheel treads, engine coolant and even refilling car fluids such as including screen wash.

Not only have they had the chance to put their new skills and knowledge into practice, but they’ve also been ensuring everyone’s vehicle are ready for the frosty months ahead.

Automotive | Winter Car Safety Checks

Students and staff from Nurture Forest School visited Bradstow Court retirement home to trim unwanted brambles, weeds and bushes to clear the grounds for the residents. Whilst there, it was also noticed that the home does not have anywhere to store garden waste so the students also decided to mock up and design a garden composter for the site.

Our students spent time onsite at College perfecting their design, which uses all recycled materials including wooden pallets and brackets salvaged from the College skip, before returning to Bradstow Court to build the composter on Friday.

Catering and Hospitality | Tea and Cake at Maurice House

Advanced Patisserie students have been busy creating and baking for Tea and Cake at Maurice House. Not only did the students create a beautiful pastillage poppy display, they also baked all sorts of sweet treats including coffee cake, victoria sponge and scones.

It has been great to see so many projects happening this Community Week, with some to develop further over the coming weeks and months.
