Mimi is the Students’ Union President at EKC Broadstairs College. We spoke to her about the role and what it means to be SU President.
She also told us why she went for the role and how students can get involved with the Students’ Union throughout the academic year.
What inspired you to run for Students’ Union President?
“I was excited to run for SU President because I used to be quiet. I wanted to get the people who have special needs like me to have their voices heard and not just the people who are loud and outgoing to be heard.
“Everybody is different. Students with special needs can do everything that everyone else does. This is my first job. I love being able to help people and not only better my future but to help other people have a better future.”
What projects do you work on during your office hours?
“I like to work on posters to promote our events, especially since I’m an Art and Design student.
“I also cover trips, fundraisers and charity events. I go around the classrooms and ask students if there are any trips they want to do. We’re starting a debate club because someone suggested it to me.”
What is a challenge you’ve faced in the role?
“A challenge I faced in the beginning was getting students involved.
“I’ve made posters and gone around to the classrooms to ask the students what they would like to do this year and to tell them what is happening in the College.”
What support do you receive from staff to assist you as SU President?
“Working with Sean, the Student Experience Officer, has been great. He’s really nice and he helps me with writing emails.
“If there’s something I don’t understand, he’s there to help me. We work well together.”
In 2026, students can look forward to bowling at Hollywood bowl, an ice-skating trip, a ‘Gift a Rose’ Valentine’s Day event, a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt, a trip to Thorpe Park, an Easter Egg scavenger hunt, an Easter Bonnet Competition, and much more.
