If you choose to study a T Level, you must complete a 45-day work placement as part of your course. This placement gives you a chance to experience working in a real-life setting, and in this case with real children!
The skills you learn, and knowledge you’ll gain from this work placement prepare you for a successful career in your chosen field. Some students have even secured a job at their setting after they completed their placement!
We caught up with our T Level Education and Early Years students about their recently work placements, here is what they told us.
What has been your favourite part of your placement?
“I like knowing I’m making a difference,” said Grace. “It’s the little things like watching them write their name for the first time. I find this really rewarding when you see that lightbulb moment.”
Terri commented: “For me, it is being able to watch the children come out of their shells and become confident in themselves. I really enjoy supporting SEND children with their development and reaching milestones.”
“My favourite part has been building connections with the children,” noted Becky. “One particular child was sent to me when she had a meltdown, and I was able to calm her down due to the relationship I’d build with her.”

What advice would you give to someone just about to start a placement?
Harlan commented: “You need to remember all behaviour is communication, they’re just trying to tell you something. Listen to the children and learn their communication styles.”
Lily added: “Don’t be scared to get things wrong or ask questions, you are new to it all – don’t panic.”
“I agree” said Megan. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and communicate with the children – most children love to talk!”
“Patience is key!” added Nisa-Nur.

What have you learnt that you have not been able to at College?
“I’ve learnt how to deal with SEND children, and the approaches that work for each different child.” Grace explained: “You have to adapt how you speak and approach different children depending on their needs and personality.”
Megan added: “I’ve learnt how to communicate and understand children’s emotions and body language to help them.”
“For me placement helped build me confidence with looking after children” Jasmine shared. “Being able to help the children and seeing their positive reaction was incredible.”
“During my placement we went on a trip to Quex park. This was my favourite part.” Noted Bryn. “I learnt a lot about being patient and supporting the children to achieve their goals.”

Their top five tips for working with children:
