Why are T Level work placements important?

16 January 2025
We caught up with some of our students to find out what they get up to during their work placements and why these are important.

A T Level is a qualification designed to give you a head start towards your chosen career, an apprenticeship, or a degree at University.

During your T Level you complete a 45-day work placement within your chosen industry. We caught up with some of our students to find out what they get up to during their work placements and why these are important.

Ellen Scott | T Level Education and Childcare

Ellen is in her second year of the Education and Childcare T Level. She recently completed her work placement as a teaching assistant at a Primary School. This was invaluable experience for Ellen as she aspires to work as a teacher in the future.

Ellen told us: “My placement in a Primary School has opened opportunities for me that has solidified my passion for teaching. I love studying T Level Early Years and Education because it has set me up for the career that I want to do in the future.”

This work placement was important as it gave Ellen the opportunity to interact with children in a professional setting and she was able to experience what a career working as a Primary School Teacher would be like.

Molly Bell | T Level Management and Administration

Molly completed her T Level last summer. During her work placement at OFP Timber Frame she impressed her work colleagues which helped to land her a role at the company as an apprentice.

Molly explained: “The T Level course was extremely helpful in allowing me to make connections and open doorways to both industry and opportunity. It allowed me to not only gain knowledge, but also real experience in the career path I wanted to follow.”

This placement gave Molly the skills and confidence she needed to figure out her next steps. The opportunity was vital in helping her secure her apprenticeship.

Lewis Smith | T Level Digital Production, Design and Development

For his work placement Lewis worked as an IT Technician at The Overseas Teacher.  Lewis was able to work across multiple departments during his placement, this helped him realise that his passion was working on the technical support team.

Lewis told us: “It was great to experience a real workplace. Even though the College is preparing us for the world of work, it was good to get first-hand experience. I thoroughly enjoying being part of the tech support team, dealing with a variety of technical issues the tutors were having. I enjoyed helping other people and thrived in the fast-paced environment.”

This work placement was crucial in helping Lewis realise what area of digital he would like to progress into.

Work placements are an imperative to give students the opportunity to gain practical experience and put the knowledge they’ve learned from the classroom into action. They are a glimpse into the industry helping students to make informed decisions about their career and make important links within the competitive industries.
