On Thursday 27 June, we held the EKC Broadstairs College Student Awards ceremony to celebrate student achievement. The event took place on campus in our Michael Wright Auditorium.
Students and staff enjoyed delicious canapes, made by our Catering department before coming together to share in the successes of our students who were being recognised for their hard work, commitment, and personal achievements.
Our Senior Leadership Team hosted the ceremony, with representatives from our curriculum award sponsors presenting their respective categories.
This year, special guest speaker, Brian Herring, a Puppeteer and Actor who has worked in film, television and advertising, was invited to talk to our students about his inspirational career journey, which has included playing BB-8 in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Awards were on offer for various categories with winners chosen by curriculum departments and our Senior Leadership Team. Categories included Student of the Year for each subject area, Outstanding Innovation, Outstanding Achievement, Contribution to the Local Community and the coveted Principal’s Award for Excellence. Winners were presented with a trophy, certificate, gift voucher and additional prizes from our sponsors.
Engineering student, Gurnoor Sekhon, who won the award for Outstanding Career Progression after gaining an Apprenticeship working on a wind farm with RWE Group, said: “I am very happy to have won; I feel exhilarated and very excited. My teachers have been very supportive, and I could not have done it without them.”
Jasmin West was awarded both the Higher Education Student of the Year and the Outstanding Innovation award for her fantastic work ethic, unwavering dedication to her Computing course and creative use of graphics technology. She said: “I was not expecting to win two awards tonight.
“I am really proud of what I have done, and I am really happy that I have got acknowledged for it. I have a lot of gratitude for my lecturers and for the College itself.
“The course allowed me to tap into different subject areas and has given me a lot of experience which I am really grateful for. I am hoping to use what I have learnt in my future career.”
Principal, Emily Johnson, said: “It is a great feeling, when I look around and see learners not just achieving what they’re expected to, but surpassing that, striving for more and actually attaining it.
“Ensuring our students fulfil their potential and achieve the best possible outcome is what our College is about, and this year it makes me overjoyed to show off these students, who are not just accomplishing that, but are going so much further.
“Congratulations to each and every winner, you have done yourself and our College proud.”
Richard Pankhurst, Head of Human Resources OFP Timber, who sponsored the awards for Business and Accounting and Carpentry, said: “It’s great to be a part of this year’s Student Awards. I think it’s important to showcase all of the great work students do. Events like these really show that the youth of today are keen to learn and progress.
“I currently work with Evie, one of our T Level students at OFP. She’s a great member of staff, even though she’s only with us one day a week we really notice when she’s not there. She is a vital and valued team member with such a can-do attitude so it’s fantastic to see her winning the Business Outstanding Student Award.”
We would like to thank all our sponsors, who generously gave prizes to winning students. We are grateful for the ongoing support from all of our sponsors, and we look forward to continuing working with these businesses in the future.
