It’s never too late to start again – hear direct from our adult learners

18 May 2026
Hear directly from our adult learners about their experiences, and how taking that first step has helped them move forward.

Returning to education as an adult can feel like a big step, but for many, it can also be the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

Across our College, adult learners are busy studying a wide range of subjects, from Maths and English, to Automotive, Catering, Beauty, and more! So, whether you’re looking to change careers, progress in your current role, or simply try something new, there’s a pathway to suit everyone.

We spoke to adult learners about their experiences, what brought them back into education, and where they hope their studies will take them.

Anna Level 3 Beauty Therapy

After completing Level 2 Beauty Therapy, Anna returned to College to continue developing her skills whilst working in a salon. She says the welcoming environment and supportive atmosphere have made a real difference to her experience as an adult learner.

“It’s always important to adapt and keep adding to your services, so I’m looking forward to adding Massage as it’ll allow me to work in Spa Salons too. I enjoy coming to College, everyone is friendly and we all support each other in our work. As a mature student with English not being my first language, I haven’t felt any barriers to my learning.”

Elon Evening Cookery

What started as a spontaneous decision quickly became something Elon now looks forward to every week. After discovering the Evening Cookery course while working at the College, he decided to give it a go and hasn’t looked back since.

Fenella GCSE Maths and Chemistry

Balancing full-time work with evening study was a challenge for Fenella, but achieving her qualifications brought her one step closer to university and a future career as a Dental Hygienist.

“All my hard work has finally paid off. Some days were 14 hours long because I would go to work at 7am and not get home from College until 9pm. If anyone is thinking of doing an evening course whilst you are working full time, just do it. It is hard work, and it can be tiring, but it pays off, just look at me now. You are never too old to learn!”

Kevin Level 2 Site Carpentry

After years working in retail management, Kevin decided that it was time for a complete career change. His passion for hands-on work and woodcraft led him to Site Carpentry, with ambitions to eventually move into Joinery.

“At the young age of 51 I decided it was time for a complete change. I have always enjoyed woodwork, so figured this course was the ideal place to start. I didn’t know what to expect coming back into education, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. The lecturers are always there to help guide you, and the environment is very welcoming and calm.”

Judith Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning

After time away from work, Judith returned to education looking for something more meaningful. Inspired by her experiences as a parent, she is now working towards a career supporting students with additional needs.

“Going back into education at 40 felt daunting, especially without GCSEs and not having enjoyed school. As a parent of two children with special needs, I’ve seen first-hand how vital the right support is, which inspired me to pursue the Supporting Teaching and Learning course, so I’d like to work with students who need additional help.”

Aaron Level 2 Motor Vehicle

Aaron returned to College after deciding his previous career path wasn’t the right fit. He says adult learning has helped him realise that career journeys don’t always follow a straight line.

“It gets drummed into you throughout school that you need to find the right career straight away, but I’ve found life just doesn’t work like that. You’ve got to try different career choices and ultimately work out whether it’s the right thing for you. You might think you’re falling behind others, but previous experiences can definitely help along the way.”

Hazel Level 3 Photography

After spending 30 years working in Health and Social Care, including throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Hazel decided it was time to pursue something creative. Now studying Photography, she describes returning to College as a second chance to rediscover what she loves.

“This course has given me a second chance at life. I worked in Health and Social Care for 30 years and found coming out of COVID, I needed something new. When I was a teenager, I studied art and it’s what I love. It’s given me a chance to go back to something I love, and do something for me. It’s been exciting, a real confidence boost.”

Dan Level 2 Site Carpentry

After years working across the building trade, Dan returned to College to gain the qualifications he needs to take the next step in his career. Studying alongside family life, the supportive and flexible environment has made returning to education much easier than expected.

“It’s been better than I thought, it’s more relaxed and we’re treated like adults – we all have kids, so if we’ve got to shoot off for any reason, then they are quite calm about that, which I wasn’t expecting. I’ve been building all my life, but I haven’t got the bit of paper to say I’m qualified. Once I get it, I want to start my own carpentry business.”

From academic qualifications to practical courses, short upskilling courses to career-focused Apprenticeships, our adult learners are proof that there’s no single path back into education.

Whatever your goal, we have a course to match your needs, and a supportive environment to help you get there.
