For Lloyd, music has always been a passion. After facing a challenging period in his life, he decided to pursue something he had dreamed about since childhood and returned to education to study Level 2 Music Production and Performance.
After completing his course, Lloyd is already looking ahead to Level 3 – and potentially even further.
Discovering a passion for performance
One of the highlights of Lloyd’s time at College was performing alongside his fellow students. As a vocalist, he formed a band with other learners and performed at College and at events outside of College.
The course also challenged Lloyd to explore a wide range of musical styles, including blues, reggae, funk and rock. He enjoyed the diversity of the course and embraced every opportunity to develop his skills across different genres and areas of performance.
Turning a difficult period into a new beginning
Lloyd’s decision to come to College followed a difficult period in his life. After suffering several strokes, he spent time at home and decided to use that time to pursue his lifelong passion for music.
“I’ve always wanted to do music since I was a child,” he says.
Returning to education gave Lloyd the opportunity to focus on his passion and gain a fresh perspective.
He added: “It allowed me to focus and put things into perspective. It’s like a rejuvenation. You’re ready to start and go again.”
The experience has strengthened Lloyd’s belief in his own resilience and shown him the importance of continuing to pursue the things that matter to him.
Returning to education as an adult learner
Returning to education also meant Lloyd found himself learning alongside students much younger than him. While this could have been daunting, Lloyd embraced the experience and quickly adapted to his new surroundings.
His advice to other adults considering a return to education?
“Be prepared for being a 60-year-old among 16-year-olds,” he said.
Lloyd enjoyed working alongside younger students, sharing different perspectives and building positive relationships with his classmates and tutors. He even found plenty of opportunities for humour along the way.
For Lloyd, age was never a barrier. His adaptability and willingness to get involved helped him make the most of his College experience.
Looking towards the future
Lloyd’s journey doesn’t end with his Level 2. After enjoying the course and developing his confidence and musical skills, he is now looking forward to progressing onto Level 3 Music and is excited to see where his studies could take him next.
He is also putting his skills into practice outside of College and is currently working on several songs that he hopes to release soon.
Could we see Lloyd’s music on Spotify in the future? If his plans are anything to go by, it certainly seems possible.
Lloyd’s advice to other adult learners
Lloyd’s story shows that it’s never too late to pursue a passion, learn something new or take your life in a different direction.
Returning to education has allowed Lloyd to develop his musical skills, meet new people and take an important step towards a new chapter.
His message to other adults considering a return to education is simple: don’t let age or circumstances stop you from following your dreams.
