Health and Social Care students have been taking the next step toward their future careers by developing key employability skills – including professional communication and interview techniques.
Level 3 learners took part in 1:1 mock interviews last week with Karen Atkinson, Director at New Horizons, gaining first-hand experience of what it’s like to meet with and impress a real employer.
This experience will play a vital role in preparing learners for employment within the sector, with lecturer, Elaine Bottle, explaining:
“This experience directly supports our course outcomes and aligns with College and Level 3 curriculum goals around employability, communication, and professionalism.
“It also enhances students’ understanding of roles and responsibilities in Health and Social Care as they prepare to enter the workforce.”
Each student received detailed, personalised feedback to help them reflect on their strengths, sharpen interview techniques, and understand what to expect when applying for future roles.
Karen Atkinson, Director at New Horizons, added her support for opportunities that help young people transition into the workforce, explaining:
“Currently, in this sector we are very short of carers for the future. I think it’s vitally important for students to have these opportunities, so that when they do go on to have an interview, they’ve had a little taster.
“I remember my first interview when I was a youngster – it was absolutely terrifying. If we can make it a little bit better and a little bit easier, and help them to progress, then I’m all for that.”
One student, who particularly impressed Karen, was Layla who said the experience was motivating and eye-opening. When asked what interview tips she’s learnt and applied to her own interviews she said:
“It’s important to communicate clearly, and try to talk about things you’re good at.
“But I think most importantly, I’d say sit up straight, smile, make eye contact and try to relax. Remember, they’re not trying to catch you out, they’re just trying to see what skills you’ll bring to the table.”
Layla and her peers can now move forward better equipped, and more confident for their future interviews.
The college extends a huge thank you to Karen and New Horizons for supporting learners in building their professionalism and career readiness.
