Margate Digital Campus recently hosted a networking event for a wide range of creative professionals in the area.

We talked with attendees who shared five myth-busting tips about working in the creative industry.

❌ Myth: In the creative industry, you must work as a traditional artist

Lindsey Biggs, Chief Innovation and Skills Officer for East Kent Colleges Group, said: “I think often people think ‘being creative’ is painting or writing. What we’re able to showcase today is our cutting-edge technology that we’ve been able to invest in.

“There’s lot of technology that students can get their hands on here, like the VR and immersive technologies and our motion capture studio.”

❌ Myth: You need to know your destination before you begin

Tim Burrell-Saward, director of Mother Ultimate Ltd and collaborator with Creative Catalyst said: “You don’t need to know where your practice is headed or the career path that you’ll take.

“It’s just about taking the first step. As one of the speakers said, ‘a 1,000-mile journey is a step at a time’.”

❌ Myth: You won’t get paid well

Thanet District Cllr Katie Pope, said: “Especially if you come from a family that isn’t creative, there’s a fear of going to work in a creative industry. There’s so much proof about the breadth of good, paid work that you can get from the people living in Thanet at the moment, so don’t be put off.”

❌ Myth: Creatives get total creative freedom

Noel Leeman, owner of Another Acronym Ltd said: “You get this idea that creative directors are people in black turtlenecks that have creative ‘visions’ that they then execute, and it very rarely works like that.

“There’s a lot of compromise and you don’t always get to make your ‘vision.’”

❌ Myth: There are only creative roles in the creative industry

Victoria Stirrup, REKM Academic Business Partner at Canterbury Christ Church University said: “I think a myth is that there are only creative roles in the creative industry.

“It’s been so good to see the range of people at this event that are involved in creative industries that also have other touch points with other industries and connections.”
