Our Level 3 Music and Performance and Production students ended the year with a lively punk-rock performance in the Michael Wright Auditorium.
Music students have spent the beginning of the academic year learning about various music genres including blues and reggae, ending this term with punk, giving them a better understanding of music production.
In keeping with the genre, the show was titled ‘Anti-Festive Anarchy’ and the performers donned outfits to match the style.
Level 3 Music and Performance and Production student, Hayden, commented: “I’ve always been a big fan of punk, but I’ve enjoyed studying the different genres so far. I never realised it, but I’ve always done one type of guitaring and one type of vocals, so I’m expanding myself. I would have never tried blues or reggae, but it was really fun learning about them. I’ve taken some of it into my own music.”
Level 3 Music and Performance and Production student, Ava, said: “Punk has been so much fun. I love coming in and getting to do the dressing up and stuff. My hair and make-up took about an hour.
“I came in playing guitar but now I’ve switched over to the bass guitar. It’s amazing that I’ve had so many options. I would usually just be practicing guitar in my room but here, every instrument is at my fingertips. We’ve learned Blues, Reggae and Punk so far, but I think I’m going to love Rock music, which is what we’re learning next.”
After learning about each genre, students are required to form a band to perform two songs in the learned genre, partnering with different classmates to form a new musical group each time.
“They learn a broader range of core characteristics by looking at the different genres that we have done. It gives them a range of tools when it comes to them actually writing their own songs,” commented Rob, Programme Director.
