If you’re thinking about returning to College as an adult, you’re not alone.

Lots of adults consider returning to education but often hesitate because of common misconceptions.

Let’s clear up some of these myths and show you why EKC Broadstairs College is a great place for adult learners.

“I’m too old to study at College – isn’t it only for 16-year-olds?”

EKC Broadstairs College has a diverse student population, with learners of all ages across subject areas and courses. So don’t be put off by age. Learning at College will keep your knowledge up-to-date and can lead to personal and professional growth at any age.

Besides, you also have life experience that may give you an advantage in your learning, as you will already have an understanding of many themes and concepts. Whether life skills and money management can assist you when studying a Business or Accounting course; or a prior awareness of how socio and economic challenges can affect people within society, you will already have a baseline knowledge of how the world works and have life experience that could be helpful within many industries.

Fenella is a prime example of an adult learner who has excelled in their studies. She took part in evening classes in GCSE Science and Maths with the hopes of going to University to study Dental Hygiene. She said: “If anyone is thinking of doing an evening course whilst you are working full time, just do it! It is hard work, and it can be tiring but it pays off – just look at me now! I’ve made so many friends from different backgrounds and I’m so grateful for that. You are never too old to learn!”

Adult courses also offer part-time study options, meaning you can work around your existing career and learn at a time that is right for you.

“Can I afford to go back into education?

Whilst education is an investment, there are many ways to make it affordable.

Advanced Learner Loans and Bursaries are available, and depending on your household income and previous educational qualifications, some of the courses can even be FREE.

“I feel out of place being older than everyone.

Many of your classmates will be in the same boat, juggling work, family, and studies.

Adult Beauty Therapy student, Anna Kovalchuk enjoyed her time on the Level 2 course so much she decided to return for a second year to complete the Level 3.

She commented: “I enjoyed learning from Donna, our Tutor, so much I decided to come back and do Level 3. It’s always important to adapt and keep adding to your services so I’m looking forward to adding Massage as it’ll allow me to work in Spa Salons too.

“I enjoy coming to College, everyone is friendly and we all support each other in our work. As a mature student with English not being my first language I haven’t felt any barriers to my learning. I’ve always felt welcomed and well supported by staff and other students.”

“As an adult, will I have as many opportunities as the 16-year-olds?”

The College’s dedication to Student Experience means that as an adult learner, you have as many opportunities as those who are 16-18.

There’s also dedicated areas for you to study independently or in groups, such as the Welcome building.

“I don’t have any qualifications – will this hold me back?”

Your past doesn’t define your future academic success.

Many adult learners find they’re more motivated and focused when returning to education after a while, and College will look at recent work experience and overall life experience, not just past grades.

“Is it too late to change my career?”

It’s never too late to pursue a new passion or career path.

Many successful career changes happen later in life and your previous work experience can often be applied in new and exciting ways in a different field.

Retraining can lead to increased job satisfaction and potentially higher earnings.
