Course overview


The Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry at EKC Broadstairs College is designed for
students who enjoy working with their hands and want to start a career in the
construction industry. This practical course will give you the skills,
confidence, and knowledge needed to progress in carpentry, whether through
further training, an apprenticeship, or entry-level work.


You will spend most of your time in our well-equipped, industry-standard
workshops, learning to use real tools and materials under the guidance of
experienced tutors. You’ll practise essential carpentry skills such as
measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling timber to create high-quality
structures and components.


Throughout the course, you will learn how to work safely, maintain tools, and
complete key carpentry tasks such as door hanging, fixing skirting boards and
architrave, setting out joists, and building stud partitions. You will also gain
an understanding of how timber structures are constructed, helping you see not
just how things are done, but why they are done that way in the trade.


The course also supports your wider personal development, helping you build
teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, all qualities that
employers highly value in the construction sector.

Course information


This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of woodwork and
carpentry, giving you hands-on experience and practical skills used in the
construction industry. You will develop confidence in working with timber and
learn how to carry out a range of tasks to a professional standard.


Students will learn key skills including:



  • Health and Safety in Construction – understanding how to work safely in a
    workshop and on site

  • Basic Tool Skills and Maintenance – learning to use, care for, and
    maintain hand and power tools

  • Shaping Timber for Floorboards – accurately measuring, cutting, and
    shaping wood

  • Making and Assembling Doors – creating functional and precise doors for
    interior and exterior use

  • Building Frames – constructing timber frames for walls and other
    structures

  • Creating Staircases – learning techniques to build safe and stable
    staircases

Throughout the course, you will practise these skills in our well-equipped,
industry-standard workshops, gaining real-world experience in carpentry. You
will also have the opportunity to take part in national skills competitions,
such as KFE4Skills , and contribute to community projects, including
Spring Community Week , giving you experience working on real
projects that benefit local organisations.
