Creative professionals often collaborate across disciplines to produce high-quality work. That’s why students at EKC Broadstairs College Margate Digital Campus have opportunities to work together on projects, as well as collaborate with local businesses, so that they can gain valuable experience in teamwork.
This can include students working together with the high-end equipment in the motion capture and photogrammetry studios. This equipment is complex and requires more than one type of skillset to produce a final project, giving students a chance to learn from each other.
Head of Campus, Ross, said: “The idea is that we could potentially have all four of our courses all working together on a project, as they would do in industry. They don’t just learn their own skill sets; they have to rely on each other.
“For example, our visual effects students would make the Unreal environment. Our content creation students would then create and be in charge of recording using the cameras. An animation student would create any kind of additional augmented reality projects, and our software development students would then also run the programming and coding for that to make it more complex.”
Joseph, Level 3 Animation student, worked on a short animation project alongside his classmates towards the end of the previous academic year. The animation work was shared among the group as part of the collaborative project.
When speaking about working on larger projects with classmates, he said: “It gives us a leverage, like a stepping stone, especially when you can see the work in its final state. I think that’s interesting.”
Andreeas, T Level Content Creation lecturer, observes students collaborate on real-world projects during their work placements as well.
She said: “My students design posters or other content during work placement, and then the same business decides that maybe they need Animation students to draw some illustrations. That’s when collaboration happens in a practical setting.”
Harry, T Level Content Creation study, has collaborated with local artists in his work placement with Tom Thumb Theatre. He said: “The other day, I was making posters for events and promotions. I did one for a guy doing an album launch, so I was making a poster promoting his act at Tom Thumb. I had pretty much full creative control.”
Larger creative projects give students the chance to learn from others and gain confidence in their new skillset.
