EKC Broadstairs College Automotive courses take students beyond the classroom workshop. We spoke to our Level 2 and Level 3 students about the skills they’ve gained, and their work placement experiences over the course of this academic year.
On our Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance, students learn how to find faults on vehicles in our workshops, and during their work placement in Spain, Sarah and Lys had the chance to diagnose faults on working cars.
Sarah, who knew nothing about cars when she began as a Level 2 student before progressing to Level 3, said: “It was an opportunity they just gave us for free, so we chose to go. I enjoyed it.”
Lys added: “It was nice working in different kinds of environments with different kinds of people and working on cars with actual issues, compared to our normal workshop where the issues are pre-programmed. We got to work on actual driving cars in Spain.”
Lys has been working on vehicles alongside her father from a young age. She is gaining new skills and workplace experiences at College.
Harrison, who is currently a Level 2 student has felt the benefits of our supportive staff since beginning the course.
He said: “I’ve learned how to change a radiator, take out an engine, how to change breaks, all since September. This course has made me a bit more confident because I know I can do it. I have a better understanding of how cars work.”
Level 2 Diploma Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair student, Jack, has completed a successful work placement with Barretts Kent, working for their interface service.
Jack said: “I saw the placement listed on a board at the College. I asked my lecturer about it, and he encouraged me to do it. I thought it would get me on the stepping ladder to a really good business.
“I’ve learned a lot at my work experience. It gave me confidence at the end of the day. I was learning to multi-task because I had to work the warehouse and get parts for cars and put them in these trollies. Near the end of my placement, I was doing that almost every day by myself because they thought I was competent enough doing it.”
