How did you start your career at The Yarrow?:

“I started here as a Food and Beverage Team Member. I finished College when the hotel first opened. I was obviously quite young but I was able to have the time in my work here to really learn and develop my skills.

“Once I honed these skills I really pushed myself. I wanted to become more of a leader and become someone that other students could look up to.”

How does working here enhance the College experience?

“In addition to my College experience, working here has taught me everything that I need to know for the industry. I felt a bit more mature at College than I was when I was at school which means that I was a perfect candidate for the role when it became available.

“Being able to have a work placement here on campus is a great opportunity. It’s not just a restaurant or just a hotel because there’s so many different skills that you could develop.

“Whether it’s in the salon or reception, there’s so many different departments that you can learn from. I’ve learnt how to do so many different things such as cooking in the kitchen. “

What’s your favourite part about The Yarrow hotel?

“There’s lots that I love here. It almost feels like a family in the hotel. You see pretty much everyone when you work here.

“I love the fact that you have people who stay for a week and that over that time, you get to know that person. It’s more personal with our guests.

“As well, we have that link with the students. I find it a great feeling if I can teach students and see them develop and improve their skills. If I’ve managed to improve their skills and boost their confidence, it makes it all worth while.”

What would you like to do in your career going forward?

“It’s a hard one really because it changes quite regularly as there’s lots of opportunities in this industry.

“When I first came to the hotel, my mind was always on hotel management.

“Lee, the General Manager, is someone I’ve looked up to for a long time, ever since he stepped foot in the door. He’s always very organized and is very hard working.  Thanks to him, I’d definitely say hotel management is something that I would look to.”

What’s your advice to those looking to enter the Catering and Hospitality industry?

“There’s so many opportunities for you if you’re willing to take that jump and have dedication towards your job.”
