The annual Freshers’ Fair welcomes students to College life

17 September 2025
EKC Broadstairs College students filled The Welcome Building for the annual Freshers Fair, welcoming both brand new and returning students to the College.

The College buzzed with activity today as the annual Freshers’ Fair kicked off the academic year, giving students a taste of College life with fun activities, freebies, free drinks, and variety of local organization stalls.

A variety of interesting stalls lined the Welcome Building and outside its doors, from Mental Elf selfies to information about the Students’ Union, the day offered something for every student to discover and enjoy.

Waiting at the entrance was Student Ambassador and Student Union Vice President, Zachery. He waited to greet students and assist with the event where needed.

“This is my second year as a student ambassador. I want to come and help the College I go to. This event can inform students about what support there is for them.

“Some of it also shows what there is for them after they leave College and go to uni or get a job. Sean (the Student Experience Officer) is very supportive and he’s always there to help if you need anything,” he said.

Many stalls were offering advice to students about maintaining good mental health, ways to volunteer in the community, the support available at College and how to get involved with the Students’ Union (SU).

Amongst the stalls you could find charities such as Mind, Community Alcohol Partnerships (CAP), Kent Coast Volunteering, Margate Pride, St John Ambulance, and Get It, amongst others. They offered support to learners as well as explaining how students could get involved, doing their part to support the community.

We spoke to Margate Pride representatives, Ellie, Kate, and Mia about their stall and why they attended Fresher’s Fair at EKC Broadstairs College.

“We’re here to support young people, whether queer or not. We’re telling the students they can come and volunteer for pride, and about the events that we put on,” said Ellie.

“Meeting students in person, rather than just posting on social media, is really impactful, particularly if a student is interested in meeting a new group of people,” said Kate.

The energy throughout the Freshers’ Fair sets the tone for the year ahead. We look forward to a year of success, growth, and plenty of exciting SU events to enjoy, including plans to attend Snow White Pantomime Show at Marlowe Theatre, Thorpe Park, and Hollywood Bowl and Westwood Cross.

Thank you to all stallholders for their attendance and the meaningful engagement with our students. Stallholders included: Kent Police, South Kent Mind, Community Alcohol Partnerships (CAP), Social Enterprise Kent, Margate Pride, Thanet Youth Council, University of Kent, St John Ambulance, Get It Metro, Sports Connect, Kent County Council, EKC Training, Kent Coast Volunteering, among others!
